MAISON CALME
Maison Calme is a project created on an individual request. It’s our first attempt at designing a single-story house, and we are very pleased with the results. Despite its simplicity and compact shape, the structure impresses with its functional layout and high-quality finishing materials.
The very first introductory meeting with the investors clearly outlined the character and building objectives for us. The level of preparation for the discussion and the amount of considerations, gathered materials, and guidelines only confirmed that we were working with very aware clients who were building their dream home and knew exactly what they wanted. A beautiful and spacious plot with a view of the distant forest was the perfect place for an exclusive single-story home. A two-car garage with additional storage space was planned as a separate structure.
The functional layout was perfectly integrated into the site’s features. In the central part of the building, along the entrance axis, there is the ‘heart of the home,’ which is a very comfortable kitchen with an island and an additional breakfast area (23 m²). It is from here, among other places, that we can access the covered terrace, which, in the summer, when the windows are open, will naturally extend the interior. The living area was planned to be 50 m², offering a variety of arrangement possibilities. The living room is another room with access to the covered terrace that we designed.
Apart from the living area, the building also houses a comfortable Master Bedroom with a view of the garden, where the bathroom and numerous built-in closets are located, a guest bedroom, and two offices. The offices, with dimensions of 16.5 m² and 10 m², also serve as additional guest bedrooms, each equipped with a sofa bed. Additionally, the project includes a guest bathroom with a shower and a utility room with space for a heat pump.
The key feature of Maison Calme is the covered terrace, which is nearly 65 m² in size and can be accessed from the main bedroom, the kitchen, and the living room. It enjoys excellent southern exposure, ensuring plenty of natural light in the interior.

FINISHING MATERIALS
Maison Calme is a highly energy-efficient building with an external wall that is 50 cm thick. The two-layer wall consists of a 25 cm ceramic block (porotherm dryfix) and a 25 cm thick high-quality styrofoam insulation. To minimize thermal bridges for large windows, the investors opted for a warm window installation. These windows will be installed within the insulation layer on special brackets that extend them beyond the facade.
The windows in this project are generously sized and provide excellent natural lighting for the interior. By using a sliding system, the entire living area seamlessly connects to the covered terrace, effectively extending the living space and allowing residents to enjoy the proximity to nature year-round. The investors opted for a simplified version of glazing, despite their love for classic windows with muntins. In the final design, they chose to include only the upper transom. This approach is increasingly popular as it strikes a perfect balance between traditional muntin-style windows and windows without dividers. This variant is significantly more cost-effective to implement and easier to maintain in terms of cleanliness. The windows and entrance doors have been designed in a warm gray color, which complements the interior nicely without imposing an industrial character, as black might. The entire facade is finished with high-quality mineral plaster in a creamy hue. Delicate stucco ornaments appear around window openings and as a crown molding accent.
The hipped roof with a 30-degree slope is covered with handcrafted dark brown roofing tiles from Heritage. The authenticity and high quality of this material make every residence covered with it truly enchanting. The roof drainage system and downspouts are concealed within the insulation layer, performing their function inconspicuously without disrupting the harmony of the building. The entrance to the building and the covered terrace are finished with warm-toned Croatian limestone. This same material can also be found on the main entrance wall, providing both guests and residents the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of natural stone.
For the landscaping on the property, we opted for perennials, shrubs, and pampas grass. Roses appear in some places, but they are tastefully integrated, maintaining a relaxed atmosphere. The garden features a small, home vegetable garden with herb boxes. We proposed a rustic picket fence that seamlessly integrates with the property, enhancing the overall aesthetic.
