GRAY HOUSE
This renovation and expansion of an 80s building is an excellent example of how much the appearance of the structure can be transformed to add elegance! We opted for shades of gray combined with contrasting black. Wherever possible, we applied recurring motifs to ensure overall consistency after the changes.
The investors did not want to interfere with the roof structure and its reconstruction, so we decided to stick with the asymmetric ridge, and the only thing we changed here was the roofing material. The use of smooth panels and the introduction of sheet metalwork where required had a significant impact on simplifying the roof overhang. In addition to the lack of roof symmetry, we had to contend with a split-level and a living room halfway between the ground floor and the first floor. The use of tall windows in this area proved to be an excellent solution and ultimately helped to mitigate the disproportion.
The front of the building and the entrance area underwent the most significant transformation. During the site inspection, we realized that it was the only proper solution. We are delighted that the investors opted for this solution. Besides adding elegance, it helped us optically emphasize the center of the building. The cornice above the entrance bay is “cut off” slightly earlier to mitigate the effect of the asymmetrical roof and accentuate this area. We chose black quartz aggregate here, which, in combination with the lighter facade plaster, highlights the entrance.
At the back of the building, there was a small extension in the form of a conservatory. Our investors dreamed of a SPA area with direct access to the garden. The site’s balance allowed us for a slight expansion, so we applied mostly glazed construction here, with a full wall separating the space from neighbors. This move allowed us to create a fantastic elevated terrace accessible from the living room. One of the changes in the project was to generate additional access to the garden directly from the kitchen. For this purpose, we used simple stairs complemented by timeless wrought iron railing, which we also planned for the terrace and balcony, in French balconies, and at the entrance stairs.
We aimed to give the building a classic character, hence our beloved stucco appeared. We applied it around the windows, at the entrance area, and on the facade, in the form of simple rustication, which was intended to emphasize the level between different floor heights. We really like the effect that was achieved here.
Are you interested in a similar building transformation? Do you want to give your facade a ‘facelift’ and give it a more classic look? Or maybe you’re planning to expand your home with additional square meters?
Please send us the following information: the location of the project, photos of the building from each side, any existing project documentation, a written description and/or inspirations regarding the direction of the changes. Once we receive the above materials, we will prepare a cooperation offer.
