COZY HOUSE

The renovation and expansion of this building were quite a challenge for us! When heading to the meeting, we didn’t even know how to approach it. However, once on site, we were inspired by the structure, and during the meeting with the investors, we managed to establish a solid action plan that aligned with their needs and vision for the changes.

The building we were tasked with had already been expanded before, but without a significant plan and composition, so it was necessary to approach it properly to harmonize the latest expansion with the existing work. First and foremost, we determined what wouldn’t change and identified the functions and spaces that were most lacking in the building. Due to the large size of the plot, we had ample room for expansion and enlargement, especially on the ground floor, where functionality and space were notably lacking.

The main entrance underwent the most significant change, shifting its location. We moved the entire area, including the circulation space, coat closet, to the other side of the building, finally highlighting the entrance doors and portal. In this area, we also added additional square meters for an office, a pantry next to the kitchen, and a WC that was previously located elsewhere. The expansion took place only on the ground floor, where an additional cuboid with a flat roof was created, providing space for air conditioning and a ventilation unit.

On the longer side of the building, there is additional, lateral access connected to the newly designed entrance area, as well as the laundry and boiler rooms. The living room with direct access to the terrace is also located on this wall. The investors opted to forgo the fireplace, which they didn’t use anyway, and instead introduced a large corner window. This move ensures ample natural light, as the entire terrace is located on the southern side. We opted for a light contrast of deep gray with off-white, a combination you already know from our other projects.

A crucial element of the terrace was creating a permanent shelter with space for an outdoor kitchen and grill. Here, we once again utilized proven solutions and a reinforced concrete structure with a full roof on columns. Subtle decorations in the form of lightweight stucco crowning the upper beam and the base of the column emphasize details that tie the terrace shelter into an elegant whole. We also didn’t forget about convenient access through the side entrance, connecting the terrace to the circulation area and allowing its use regardless of the weather.

A significant challenge was the small dining area, which we expanded slightly, providing space for a large table and an original sideboard that will be placed in this room. Our clients also needed an additional room on the upper floor, so a simple cube appeared above the dining area, ensuring maximum use of space and eliminating sloped ceilings.

The finishing materials we worked with include a combination of plaster in shades of off-white and deep gray, a melange of hand-formed earth-toned brick tiles, warm gray window joinery, and standing seam metal roofing. Additionally, some windows will be complemented by a stone lintel to add cottage character to the building. The terraces will be finished with elegant porcelain tiles, capturing the ambiance of natural stone and being much easier to maintain in terms of cleanliness.

Are you interested in a similar building transformation? Do you want to give your facade a ‘facelift’ and give it a more classic look? Or maybe you’re planning to expand your home with additional square meters?

Please send us the following information: the location of the project, photos of the building from each side, any existing project documentation, a written description and/or inspirations regarding the direction of the changes. Once we receive the above materials, we will prepare a cooperation offer.
